An autoclave is a machine used to carry out industrial and scientific processes that require elevated temperature and pressure relative to ambient conditions. Autoclaves are employed for pre‑operative sterilization, and in the chemical industry they are used for curing coatings, vulcanizing rubber, and conducting hydrothermal synthesis.

Use of the Autoclave

Autoclaves are widely used in microbiology and mycology, healthcare and prosthetic manufacturing, tattooing and body piercing, and funeral services. Their size and functionality depend on the materials to be sterilized; in the chemical and food industries, they are sometimes referred to as sterilizers.
An important and increasingly popular application of autoclaves is the pre‑treatment and disinfection of waste, such as pathogenic hospital waste. These machines operate on essentially the same principle as conventional autoclaves, using pressurized steam and superheated water to inactivate potential infectious agents. The latest generation of waste‑conversion systems can achieve the same results without requiring pressure vessels, sterilization media, rubber materials, protective clothing, auxiliary supplies, gloves, or other such components.
Autoclaves are also widely used for the curing of composite materials, particularly when bonding multilayer structures, as they eliminate any voids that could compromise material strength, and for the vulcanization of rubber. The high temperature and pressure generated by autoclaves help ensure the reproducibility of physical properties.
Other types of autoclaves are used to grow crystals under high temperature and pressure. Synthetic quartz crystals for the electronics industry are grown in autoclaves. Parachute packaging for specialized applications can be sterilized in a vacuum‑sealed autoclave, allowing the parachutes to be heated and packed into their containers at a reduced volume.
The hot wastewater purification system is a single-purpose autoclave designed to disinfect liquid and wastewater.
In medicine
A medical autoclave is a device that uses steam to disinfect equipment and other objects. This means that all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores are inactivated.
Autoclaves are found in many healthcare facilities, laboratories, and other settings where sterility must be ensured. Today, many procedures rely on single-use items rather than sterilizable, reusable ones. This trend first emerged with hypodermic needles, but nowadays numerous surgical instruments—such as forceps, needle holders, and scalpel handles—are typically disposable rather than reusable. Autoclaves are especially critical in lower-income countries, where equipment is often reused more frequently.
Because moist heat can cause heat‑sensitive products, such as certain plastics, to melt, they cannot be sterilized using this method. Paper and other materials that may be damaged by steam are also sterilized by an alternative process. In all autoclaves, items should always be spaced apart to ensure uniform penetration of steam throughout the load.

Autoclaves are commonly used for the pre‑treatment of municipal solid waste prior to medical waste disinfection. Due to environmental and health concerns arising from combustion byproducts emitted by incinerators—particularly in small facilities typically operated by individual hospitals—this approach has become increasingly prevalent as an alternative to incineration.
In dentistry, autoclaves are used to sterilize dental instruments.
In most industrialized countries, medical-grade autoclaves are regulated medical devices. Consequently, many medical-grade autoclaves are operated only within the scope of their regulatory approvals.
