Petroleum is an essential energy source. At every stage—extraction, transportation, refining, marketing, and end-use—petroleum instruments are required to assess the performance and quality of crude oil and petroleum products.

In developed countries, commonly used petroleum testing instruments—such as those for flash point, distillation, viscosity, pour point, cloud point, and cold filter plugging point—are all operated automatically under computer control, with automated measurement and printing capabilities. With the rapid growth of China’s economy, petroleum testing equipment has gradually evolved in recent years from manual to automated systems.

Automatic petroleum instruments, particularly the “high‑temperature automatic petroleum instrument,” have, after more than a decade of dedicated effort, secured five national patents covering innovations such as an aluminum‑block cold trap, high‑temperature step‑change control, and multi‑cold‑trap scanning refrigeration. It is precisely the mastery of core technologies—such as fiber‑optic sensing and programmable logic control—that has enabled these instruments to reach a high level of performance. Compared with branded products from foreign companies, they are by no means inferior; in particular, their automated measurements of crude oil viscosity, pour point, and cloud point are even superior.
